All special-election senators to be in place for lame-duck session
"Sen.-elect Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) will be sworn in Monday, joining new Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.), who joined the upper chamber after the election. All three senators saw their general election wins double as special election victories, thereby allowing them to be sworn into office before the 112th Congress convenes in January."

"In winning, Murray preserves breathing room for the Senate's shrunken Democratic majority after Republicans took control of the House for the rest of President Barack Obama's first term. Democrats won a key Senate seat in West Virginia as they looked to hold on the upper chamber of Congress
"West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin (D) was declared the winner in his state. He overcame Republican John Raese, who at one point had held a lead in polls."
"With Manchin's win as well as victories for Democrats in Delaware and Connecticut, it will be difficult for Republicans to run the table of competitive races and win the 10 seats they need to take the Senate, which had long been seen as a difficult goal."

Why Marco Rubio's Election Would Be the Most Important One for Conservatives
"Marco Rubio's election Tuesday is vital because he is one of the few conservative leaders on the horizon who combines all three qualities. He could be president some day. That's why Democrats were so desperate to get Kendrick Meek out of the race and try to help Gov. Charlie Crist's independent."

The Justice Department Goes to Alaska
"Here is the background: After Joe Miller defeated Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary, Murkowski decided to run as a write-in candidate — meaning that her name would not be on the ballot, and thus that ill-informed voters will not be reminded at the polling place that she is an option. But on October 15, the Alaska Division of Elections decided to provide polling places with posters listing write-in candidates and their party affiliations. The list would obviously help Murkowski."

With Angle Up 4, NYT on Harry Reid: ‘Some Republicans Fear Losing Such a Powerful Ally in Washington’
"In a classic example of liberal media bias, the front page of the print edition of today’s New York Times carries an above-the-fold story about the Nevada U.S. Senate race--headlined, “In Nevada, It’s Hold Nose and Cast Vote.” At one point, the story says: “Some Republicans fear losing such a powerfully ally in Washington—no matter that his name is Reid—at a time when Nevada is in precarious economic shape.”

Powerful Casino Industry Bets Heavily on Reid Again
"A symbol of Mr. Reid's support for the industry is his backing of a major gambling and resort project in Las Vegas called City Center, an $8.7 billion glass and steel complex that towers over the Las Vegas strip. It has high-end hotels, condos, spas, shops and a casino floor—and, crucial for a politician, 9,700 employees."
"The project opened with fanfare in December 2009, but not before a brush with death. City Center was built by MGM Resorts International and Dubai World, and the companies racked up big debt just as the U.S. financial crisis hit in 2008. By early 2009, a dispute between the partners threatened to shut down the project. MGM went to its banks asking for concessions on its loans."

The Extremism of Barbara Boxer
"During each of her last two campaigns for the United States Senate, first against the outspoken conservative Bruce Herschenson and then against the mild-mannered moderate Matt Fong, Barbara Boxer depicted her opponent as an extremist out of touch with mainstream American voters and their values. Her television ads have already begun characterizing her current opponent, Carly Fiorina, as "too extreme" for California. However, a review of votes cast by Mrs. Boxer in the Senate and of recent poll results indicates that it is she who has moved far from the views of most Americans."
